2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Poor Feedback
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer game identity.
The president stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Strategic Hires
The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to consideration and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the recent years producing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The option is up to you."
The game lacks an announced release date or supported systems, but fans can expect more updates as creation progresses.
