A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
