Are You Able to Crack This? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Forged the Contemporary World

One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.

As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Before automated cutting, building a modest trading ship required around 10 sawyers working for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”

Thanks to their rapid automated cutter, which converted timber into planks using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster than any other nation, which unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic supremacy in the continent and the world.

The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends the writer, was “mankind’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted the circular movement into up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same rotary motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead one precise increment per cycle.

“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts in order that the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each downward motion while advancing with each return motion. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent use of basic parts.”
