Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
